Contact Lenses

Contact lenses for a new outlook on life!

If you are a spectacle wearer or finding that your eyesight is deteriorating with age.. take a look at contact lenses and join the many people (around 3m in the UK) who have discovered the benefits they provide. The freedom that wearing contact lenses brings, whether for full time use or just for sports such as golf or rugby or any other physical activity can be life changing. You may have tried them some years ago (or known someone who did) and think they are uncomfortable, inconvenient to use and expensive. They are now extremely comfortable, and virtually all the historic reasons for not wearing contact lenses have been overcome. Radical changes in their manufacture has made them an easier, more comfortable and affordable option for spectacle wearers of all ages, including people with special prescriptions.

Contact-lenses-2

People of all ages, young or old, can wear contact lenses.

There is no minimum age for contacts. Lots of teens, and even some pre-teens, wear lenses. The average age for first getting contacts is currently 16. As contact lenses require good hygiene and clean and safe handling to keep the eyes healthy, it is more about the child’s maturity and their ability to care for their contact lenses rather than their age.

Different types of lenses available and choosing the right ones for you and your lifestyle is crucial

Contact lenses are now designed to suit all lifestyles. Around 90% of all contact lens wearers wear disposables. Other forms of contact lens include tinted, hard, and gas permeable.

Disposable Soft Lenses

  • Replaced regularly, so more hygienic.
  • Wear full-time or part-time or just on special occasions!
  • Easy to look after
  • Virtually everyone can instantly wear today’s disposable contact lenses
  • Even if you couldn’t wear lenses in the past, you may be able to now

Daily Disposables

Daily contact lenses offer you a fresh new pair every day making them the easiest and most convenient contact lenses ever! Just wear and dispose.. what could be simpler. And because you wear new lenses every day they are always at their optimum best and your vision remains crisp and clear with healthier, happier, more comfortable eyes.

You can wear them when you want, so you can choose to wear glasses by day or contacts by night. They are also ideal if you want contact lenses for occasional wear or for when you are playing sports – it’s your choice.

Reusable Disposables

Reusable disposables are probably the most economical choice. They are still for daily wear, however, rather than disposing of them at the end of the day, you will need to clean and store them until you wear them again. Depending on the manufacturer they should be replaced every two or four weeks.

Special lenses are available for the correction of Astigmatism, and Presbyopia – the inability to focus properly on fine print or up-close work.

Bifocal / Varifocal Contact Lenses

These lenses let you see in the distance and close up for reading. If you are just starting to wear reading glasses or have been for some time these could be the lenses for you.

Toric Lenses for Astigmatism

If you have astigmatism you will have blurry or distorted vision at all distances, varying with the strength of the astigmatism. Toric lenses are contact lenses that are designed to correct astigmatism.

How to get started with contact lenses?

Only registered optometrists, contact lens opticians and medical practitioners can fit contact lenses so if you want to try contact lenses you should first make an appointment for a contact lens assessment.

At the appointment we will discuss your visual and lifestyle needs and then undertake an eye and contact examination to determine if your eyes are healthy and suitable for lens wear. We will assess the size and shape of your eyes and general suitability for lenses for the purpose you want them. We will then recommend the lenses that are the best for you, your lifestyle and budget, before trialling them with you.

Once you’ve decided to go ahead, our Dispensing Opticians will teach you how to insert, remove and care for your lenses. To assess the fit, the prescription and how you tolerate a particular lens, they will send you away for a few days so you can trial them. Once everything is fine they will organise your contact lens wearing plan. We generally offer a pay as you go option for daily lenses or direct debit for monthly replacement lenses.
